St. Mary’s Jacobite Syrian Sunday School – Sharjah, U.A.E
“Expect great things from God, attempt great things for God”

“Discipline your children, while they are young enough to learn,
if you don’t you are helping them to destroy themselves”.
(Proverbs 19:18)

One of the most urgent needs in the life of the Christian Church today is for God’s people to possess and demonstrate a stronger and more vibrant faith, so that our children may follow it. “Fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom”. It is our duty to show up and train up a child in the way he should go at the right time and motivate to lead a true Christian life. We can bend a small plant with tender stem easily with one finger, but when it grows to a tree, it doesn’t yield to the pressure. We may have to cut it or break it with much force. This is the case of a child also. To grow in the knowledge of God from the tender age is highly significant. Examples and wise guidance by parents and teachers are very important.

Our Sunday school started in the year 1981 with one common class of 10 students and one teacher in one of our members’ house. Rapid growth during past years increased the strength of students and teachers. The academic year of the Sunday school is from January to December. The classes are conducted on every Friday after the Holy Qurbana from 10.45 AM to 12.30 PM in the Church and Parish hall. 30 minutes are dedicated for the general assembly to learn new devotional songs, church hymns, bible reading and prayer. There are classes from baby class to eleventh standard. The present strength of our Sunday school is around 400 students with 12 classes and 19 divisions. 22 teachers are presently devoted in preaching the word of God, preparing them to grow as true Christians.

Our Sunday school is affiliated to Malankara Jacobite Syrian Sunday School Association (MJSSA) and follows its syllabus and curriculum. Jacobite Syrian Vacation Bible School (JSVBS) is conducted every year in association with our sister Sunday schools in UAE.

Half yearly and Annual Examinations are conducted during the month of June and December respectively and prizes are awarded to toppers and also to those who got maximum attendance. Children who have successfully completed the assigned course and passed the examination in the tenth standard are given certificates by MJSSA-UAE.

Silver Jubilee celebration:

Our Sunday school has celebrated the Silver Jubilee of its inception in 2006. Yearlong programs were organized and at the grand finale function in January 2007, the Silver Jubilee Souvenir was also published.

Annual Talent Fest & Inter-Sunday school Talent Fest:

As part of the extracurricular activities, annual talent fest is held on various items during the month of October and the winners are awarded with prizes. Our Sunday school is also actively participating in the Inter-Sunday school talent fests organized by the MJSSA-UAE among the six Jacobite Syrian Sunday schools in UAE. Our Sunday school won the overall championship trophy securing maximum points and as well as individual championship trophies consecutively for the last 3 years.

With an aim to bring a behavioral change among the growing up children, to make them more creative, confident, patient, kind and self controlled for molding a better spiritual life, teenager student’s camp, counseling camp etc. are organized every year.

St. Mary’s Children’s Library:

In order to inculcate the habit of learning by reading and to make them more informative, a children’s library was inaugurated in 2006 as part of Silver Jubilee celebrations with a collection of 300 books of biblical, religious and moral stories and write-ups in English. More books are added every year and the great interest shown by the children have made us to work on this more sincerely.

Our sincere appreciation and thanks are always there for our present President and Vicar Rev. Fr. Biju Areeckal for his constant support and guidance rendering these days. We remember and extend our gratitude to the former Vicars and the teachers for their valuable contributions to the development of our Sunday school. Also, take this opportunity to request the entire alumnus to remember and pray for our Sunday school.

Above all we thank our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ for the mercy and blessings bestowed upon us throughout the past years and helped us to become a progressive spiritual organization of this Parish.
